International Day of Neutrality 2019 starts December 11, 2019 at 01:00AM

Title: International Day of Neutrality 2019

Description: Neutrality — defined as the legal status arising from the abstention of a state from all participation in a war between other states, the maintenance of an attitude of impartiality toward the belligerents, and the recognition by the belligerents of this abstention and impartiality — is critically important for the United Nations to gain and maintain the confidence and cooperation of all in order to operate independently and effectively, especially in situations that are politically charged.
As Article 2 of the UN charter obligates member states to settle their international disputes by peaceful means and to refrain from the threat or the use of force in their relations, the General Assembly reaffirmed those obligations in its resolution 71/275.
The resolution also underlined that some states’ national policies of neutrality can contribute to the strengthening of international peace and security and play an important role in developing mutually beneficial relations among countries of the world.
Recognizing that such national policies of neutrality are aimed at promoting the use of preventive diplomacy, which is a core function of the United Nations and occupies a central place among the functions of the Secretary-General, the General Assembly decided to declare 12 December the International Day of Neutrality, and called for marking the day by holding events aimed at enhancing public awareness of the value of neutrality in international relations.

National Lager Day 2019 starts December 9, 2019 at 01:00AM

            Title: National Lager Day 2019

Description: National Lager Day is observed on December 10 annually.
Obviously we advise responsible drinking, but today is the perfect excuse to go out to a pub and enjoy a glass or two of beer or buy yourself a couple of your favourite bottles and enjoy in the comfort of your own home!
The background to the day is relatively unknown but breweries and lager lovers alike relish the national observance!
Lager is one of the two main types of beer, ale being the other one. The difference between lager and ale is that lager is fermented and conditioned at low temperatures while ale is brewed using a warm fermentation. Pale lager is the most widely consumed style of beer in the world.
In the beginning, warm fermentation was the only known method of making beer therefore all beers were ales. Cold fermented beers first appeared in Bavaria in the 16th century. Lager brewing was brought to America from Europe circa 1840.   Pale lager is the most popular type of lager but it is not the only kind with dark lagers becoming more well known and popular in recent times.
On the National Lager Day, many breweries and pubs host various events such as beer tastings and brewery tours.  Whilst we encourage participation in this event, we must remind you to drink responsibly!  You will thank us for reminding you not to go overboard on the lager consumption!

Human Rights Day 2019 starts December 9, 2019 at 01:00AM

              Title: Human Rights Day 2019

Description: Human Rights Day commemorates the day the General Assembly of the UN adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The UDHR is one of UN’s major achievements as well as the first enunciation of human rights across the world.
Adopted on 10th December 1948, the Declaration stipulates universal values and a shared standard of achievement for everyone in every country. While the Declaration is not a binding document, it inspired over 60 human rights instruments that today make a common standard of human rights. It is the most translated document around the globe – available in over 500 languages.
The 2018 commemoration of Human Rights Day will mark the beginning of a year-long celebration of 70 years since the international community adopted the Declaration. We celebrate all our inalienable rights and freedoms including a right to education, a decent living, health care and a right to live free from any form of discrimination among others.
Despite the efforts to protect human rights, the hostility toward human rights and those who defend them continues to rise. As a result, this year’s Human Rights Day advocates for everyone to stand up for their rights and those of others – civil, economic, political and cultural rights. Additionally, the day aims to enlighten us about how our rights are a foundation of sustainable development and peaceful societies. The day also acknowledges the advocates and defenders of human rights around the world.

International Anti Corruption Day 2019 starts December 8, 2019 at 01:00AM

Title: International Anti Corruption Day 2019

Description: Corruption is a complex social, political and economic phenomenon that affects all countries. Corruption undermines democratic institutions, slows economic development and contributes to governmental instability.
Corruption attacks the foundation of democratic institutions by distorting electoral processes, perverting the rule of law and creating bureaucratic quagmires whose only reason for existing is the soliciting of bribes. Economic development is stunted because foreign direct investment is discouraged and small businesses within the country often find it impossible to overcome the “start-up costs” required because of corruption.
On 31 October 2003, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption and requested that the Secretary-General designate the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as secretariat for the Convention’s Conference of States Parties (resolution 58/4).
The Assembly also designated 9 December as International Anti-Corruption Day, to raise awareness of corruption and of the role of the Convention in combating and preventing it.  The Convention entered into force in December 2005.
Governments, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, the media and citizens around the world are joining forces to fight this crime. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) are at the forefront of these efforts.

National Cotton Candy Day 2019 starts December 6, 2019 at 01:00AM

Title: National Cotton Candy Day 2019

Description: Because there obviously arent already enough reasons to celebrate in December, today the 7th December we recognise National Cotton Candy Day!
Cotton candy was first created in Europe in the 18th century. At that time, it was very expensive because spun sugar had to be made manually. Ironically the dentist William Morrisson and confectioner John C. Wharton invented machine-spun cotton candy in 1897 thus making this confection generally available.
Cotton candy, also known as candy floss or fairy floss, is a confection that is almost 100 percent sugar. Cotton candy is made by heating sugar to liquify it and then spinning the sugar our through tiny holes. The sugar re-solidifies in thin strands which remind of glass. The final cotton candy is very light because it contains mostly air. .Cotton candy is a treat typically served at fairs, carnivals and fairs where it is sold in plastic bags or on a stick.   The natural color of cotton candy is white, but it can be changed with the help of food coloring. Cotton candy can also be flavored. The largest manufacturer of cotton candy in the United States is Tootsie Roll Industries.
To celebrate the National Cotton Candy Day, treat yourself to some cotton candy. Just don’t go overboard and end up with a sugar rush!

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day 2019 starts December 6, 2019 at 01:00AM

Title: National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day 2019

Description: National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is an annual national observance in the United States. It is observed on December 7 to honor the victims of the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
On December 7, 1941 aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Almost 2,500 military personnel were killed and more than 1,100 others were injured. Two U. S. Navy battleships were sunk. Five battleships, three destroyers, three cruisers, and one minelayer were destroyed.
Several hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor Canada became the first Western nation to declare war on Japan. On December 8, the United States followed the example of Canada and entered the Second World War.
National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day was declared in 1944 by the United States Congress. It is not a federal holiday therefore schools, government offices and businesses don’t close but may organisations recognise the historical day and mark the occasion. The Flag of the U. S. is traditionally flown at half-mast in honor of those killed or injured during the attack. Special events are held in memory of patriots.   Several memorials have been established to honor those who were killed or injured during the attack. They include the USS Arizona and the USS Utah memorials in Pearl Harbor.
Take some time today to remember those who lost their lives and the impact that the attack had on the history of our great nation.

International Civil Aviation Day 2019 starts December 6, 2019 at 01:00AM

Title: International Civil Aviation Day 2019

Description: International Civil Aviation Day 2018 is a United Nations (UN) annual observation day, officially declared by the UN in 1996 and celebrated on December 7th each year by all member states of the UN.
The day has been celebrated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (a UN body) since 1994, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (ICAO), which was established in 1944 to establish co-operation and uniformity in aviation internationally.
The day is held to recognise the social, economic and developmental benefits of aviation and international air travel as well as commemorating the ICAO’s role in safety, efficiency and uniformity in global aviation.
The day is celebrated with educational events, aviation themed lectures and classroom events, and press and media releases. Airlines such as Airbus advertise and offer information on the day on their websites. The Airbus Website has a very good diagram relating to the impact of international aviation.
The UK were initially unwilling to accept International Aviation Day and claimed that it didn’t fall within the guidelines of the ICAO and was a waste of UN resources, but now takes part, with air displays for example and fundraising from spectators, as the Battle of Britain anniversary falls within about a week of International Civil Aviation Day.

International Volunteers Day 2019 starts December 4, 2019 at 01:00AM

                                Title: International Volunteers Day 2019

Description: International Volunteer Day (IVD) on 5 December was designated by the United Nations in 1985 as an international observance day to celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism.
It is an opportunity for volunteers, and volunteer organisations, to raise awareness of, and gain understanding for, the contribution they make to their communities. It is also viewed as a unique chance for volunteers and organisations to celebrate their efforts, to share their values, and to promote their work among their communities, non-governmental organisations (NG0’s), United Nations agencies, government authorities and the private sector.
The act of volunteering is found in all cultures, languages, and religions. Each year, hundreds of millions of people volunteer their time and skills to help make the world a better place. When they volunteer, they help to improve the lives of others. And when they volunteer, they also gain a greater sense of belonging to their communities.
On 5 December, people around the world will celebrate IVD with rallies, parades, volunteer fairs, group clean ups, blood donations, conferences, exhibitions, fundraising, workshops and volunteer recognition events.

World Soil Day 2019 starts December 4, 2019 at 01:00AM

                                  Title: World Soil Day 2019

Description: World Soil Day 2019 is on December 5th, this annual awareness day run by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is usually held on the same date every year. The event aims to raise awareness of the importance of soil quality for human well-being, food security and ecosystems, and events are held at the UN FAO offices and through community based events. The day was first considered by the International Union of Soil Sciences in 2002, but was not officially endorsed by FAO until 2013.
Soil is the top layer of the earth, the layer which everyone is familiar with, but not everyone knows much about, many householders don’t even know if their garden is clay, loam or sandy soil or a mixture, but the knowledge of soil type, structure, management and condition is what can make the difference between good plant growth and a thriving ecosystem and a wasteland.
Soil is made up of organic and inorganic matter, air and water, and the mixture depends on the way the soil is managed or neglected, which in turn impacts on how plants grow. The human race is dependent on soil for food, and soil erosion and poison leads to famine, soil also holds significant carbon, which is lost through erosion, which increases climate change.
We all depend on soil, so the more that that is understood of it, the better the human race thrives, from beautiful gardens to crops that produce our food, an example is where programmes in Africa have taught small farmers to manage soil against drought and erosion, meaning bigger and better crops and less hunger and poverty in some areas.
Members of the public can liaise with FAO to run soil themed events for World Soil Day, educating people on soil and the significance of soil and it’s treatment.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2019 starts December 2, 2019 at 01:00AM

Title: International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2019

Description: The estimated one billion people living with disabilities worldwide face many barriers to inclusion in many key aspects of society. As a result, people with disabilities do not enjoy access to society on an equal basis with others, which includes areas of transportation, employment, and education as well as social and political participation.
The right to participate in public life is essential to create stable democracies, active citizenship and reduce inequalities in society.
International Day of Persons with Disabilities falls on the 3rd of December each year, with the aim of promoting empowerment, and helping to create real opportunities for people with disabilities. This enhances their own capacities and supports them in setting their own priorities. Empowerment involves investing in people – in jobs, health, nutrition, education, and social protection. When people are empowered they are better prepared to take advantage of opportunities, they become agents of change and can more readily embrace their civic responsibilities.
