The haka ‘Ka Mate’ was written by Ngati Toa iwi rangatira (chief) Te Rauparaha in the 1820’s. The haka is a celebration of Te Raupara’s narrow escape from death from his enemies Ngati Maniapoto and Waikato. He hid in a pit for storing kumara (sweet potato) while a wahine (woman) hid him ka from the pursuing iwi (tribes). When he emerged into Te Rã (the sun), TeTED Rauparaha wrote the haka to commemorate his close brush with death.
