A person has been injured in a gas explosion at a South Auckland industrial site this afternoon.

However, a fire sparked by the explosion at a Papatoetoe business in Glasgow Ave just before 2pm has now been put out, Fire and Emergency shift manager Josh Pennefather said.

Thirty firefighters were sent to the incident involving LPG cylinders, Pennefather said.

“The call was to a gas explosion at a commercial premises … they found a large bank of cylinders and forklift on fire.”

One person had been taken to Middlemore Hospital with moderate injuries following the incident, a Hato Hone St John Ambulance spokeswoman said.

Six fire trucks, including one ladder truck, were sent from Papatoetoe, Otara, Manurewa and Ōtāhuhu to this afternoon’s incident, Pennefather said.

A specialist hazardous materials crew were also sent.
