At least one person is understood to have died after a violent incident on a Gisborne Street last night.
Emergency services were called to Manuka St in the suburb of Elgin around 11.30pm.
Details are still emerging, but the Herald understands at least one person has died.
A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said three people had been transported to Gisborne Hospital in a critical condition.

The hospital is in lockdown, and armed police are guarding the doors.
Police have been approached for comment.
