Wellington Airport’s vision for an upgraded waterfront
precinct in Lyall Bay has taken a big step forward with
Wellington City Council voting unanimously to sell a parcel
of waterfront land to enable the
development.

Wellington Airport is proposing to
rejuvenate four parcels of land along Lyall Bay Parade,
extending from the Spruce Goose down to the Leonie Gill
pathway. This includes the Huetepara Park area.

Key
enhancements include a surfers hub, toilet, shower, and
changing room facilities, better pedestrian access for all
beach users via boardwalks and ramps, play areas and viewing
platforms, plantings, and much more.

The area will be
architecturally designed and have capacity for hospitality,
recreational and retail offerings.

Wellington Airport
chief executive Matt Clarke says:

“This is great
news for everyone who loves Lyall Bay and we are chomping at
the bit to bring our exciting plans to life.

“Lyall
Bay is a spectacular part of our city and we are thrilled to
have been trusted by the Council to raise it to its full
potential.

“The proposed development
will deliver a combination of public amenities and new
commercial venues set against one of the most beautiful
beachfronts in the country.”

“We’re thrilled with this
big step forward for a project we’re passionate about and
have been supporting for years.

“The east side of
Lyall Bay beach is sunny and sheltered but has few amenities
for the public. It’s always had great potential, and
we’re excited to work on creating fun and functional
spaces for everyone to enjoy.

“It’s great to have
the support of Wellington Airport and Wellington City
Council for this shared vision of a more inclusive,
accessible, and vibrant South Coast.”

The project
will be funded by the airport with confirmation and timings
of next steps are due to be confirmed
mid-2025.
