Grant told the Herald that the shop’s only other Powerball winner was in 2017, when a ticket sold at the store won $6m.
“This is substantially a bigger amount … it’s definitely exciting and we’re so happy for whoever it is.”
Grant said it was a family business, and one of the few Lotto stores that had been around since the first draw in 1987.
“It’s been nearly 40 years, and this is our biggest winning ticket that we’ve sold by far.”
She said it was also a positive win for Gisborne.
“We can really use some good news here. There just seems to be lots of, you know, negative stuff around at the moment. So having something positive in the news about Gisborne is amazing.”
Meanwhile, three other Lotto players from Auckland, Northland, and Thames-Coromandel have also won $250,000 each with Lotto first division.
One division two winner will pocket $50,419, while one Strike player has won $400,000 with Strike Four.
The winning numbers were 3, 34, 14, 16, 31 and 23. The Bonus ball was 33 and the Powerball 7.
There was just one Powerball division one winner, taking home $28,250,000.
What to do if you win
Ticket holders can immediately see if they have won if they bought a ticket through the MyLotto app. Prizes of $1000 or less are automatically credited to the winner’s account.
For prizes exceeding $1000, winners must complete an online prize claim form.
Winners with physical tickets must still visit a Lotto retailer to claim their prize.
For the Powerball jackpot to be claimed, a ticket holder must get all six Lotto numbers correct as well as the Powerball number.
